Resolution Run Recap – Darnell’s First Trail Race

When I’m in town over the holidays, I always do the Resolution Run. What better way to start the new year than with Red Mountain dirt all over your calves and shoes? I’ve been running it since their first year when the park wasn’t even officially open and the trails were just muddy indications of what was to come. The Resolution Run was a fun morning on the trails for me. I ran a 20k feeling decent despite nursing a cold, then turned around and ran 10 more miles the next day. My body is officially ready for the 2016 racing season! But this race wasn’t about me. My running…

    Bearly Ultra Race Recap

Ah, the Bearly Ultra. The name says it all. The time I was bearly recovered enough from Pinhoti to actually try and run fast. The day I bearly survived because it was unseasonably hot. The race I bearly finished. (See what I’m doing here?) I signed up for the race on a whim—my friends asked me to run on their relay team, Cougars and the Kitten. You can’t say no to running on a relay team, especially if there are costumes involved! I had originally planned to run all 27 miles (run my leg and then keep running) for the fun of it, but quickly changed my plan when I saw the temperatures.…

    How To Plan An Ultramarathon

It’s official kiddos—the Birmingham Ultra Trail Society is a badass trail community that is taking the southeast by storm! We held our first race last weekend, the Bearly Ultra, Cub Half Ultra, and Wolfpack Relay, and it was a huge success. A team of BUTS had been planning the race for a few months now, and it was a great feeling to watch our baby grow from an idea over beers into a fun event that had people raving. *tear* Itching to plan an ultra of your own? Want to challenge the BUTS for the title of best trail group? Here are some tips: Make the race pleasantly difficult—We wanted…

    Week 1 Resolute Running Recap

My first week as a Resolute Runner has come and gone. Here’s a breakdown of my schedule, my ups and downs, and what I’ve learned: Easy Runs Monday and Tuesday I had some easy runs scheduled. Easy my ass – running slower purposely is HARD! I know it serves a purpose, but it took a lot of energy and willpower to run slower when all of my friends took off at faster paces. I’ll be patient and trust the training though, because I know the day will soon come where I have some blistering fast runs. Trail Running I had my first trail run on Tuesday with some members of…

5 Takeaways From My First Trail Race

Last weekend I dipped my toes into the world of ultra running by running in the Birmingham Stage Race, a 3 day, 50 mile race meant to mimic an ultra marathon. For those of you who aren’t familiar with ultra running, it is any distance over 26.2 miles, typically a 50K, 50 mi, 100 mi run on trails. I registered on a whim to prepare for pacing in tomorrow’s Pinhoti 100 to familiarize myself with trails and aid stations, and most importantly to meet the runner that I’d be pacing IRL (we met on Twitter.) I signed up for Day 2 at Red Mountain Park, and ran 17 miles in…
