The Super Bowl Halftime Show. How incredible was it? If you didn’t see it, go and watch it right this moment, then scurry on back here. Done? Good.
So many spectacular things happened—Katy Perry on a lion, themed costumes to match every song, the return of Missy Elliott, dancers and props worthy of an Olympics ceremony, and fireworks. Trippy, huh?
But despite all the dazzle pulling your attention in different directions, one star shined brighter than the rest. Not Katy, not meh-looking Tom Brady, not the dancing beach balls. Left Shark. My new hero and spirit animal.
Poor Left Shark. He clearly missed dress rehearsal. Or showed up, but didn’t quite master his 8 counts. But no matter. On one of the biggest stages in the world, Left Shark swam up, took his place in the spotlight, and danced his little shark heart out. And subsequently won mine.
He was so off. So off. I’ve read articles and heard people say that Left Shark wasn’t as bad as people are making him out to be, the moves were close enough. No. You’re wrong. Any trained dancer or human with eyeballs can see his choreography was abysmal.
Which is why Left Shark is so inspiring! He rocked out to his inner song. Danced to the beat of his own drum. It was his moment to shine, and shine he did. Zero fucks, world.
And let’s address that Left Shark isn’t even Left Shark—he’s on Katy’s right! No matter. Someone named him Left Shark, and there’s no going back. Own it, buddy!
There are boatloads of inspiring quotations and memes out there. Read one, read them all. But in just a few short seconds, Left Shark danced them all to life. “Wherever you go, go with all your heart.” “Sing like there’s nobody listening.” “Dance to the beat of a different drum.” Left Shark! You’re so wise!
What if we all adopted Left Shark’s mentality on life? How much freer, happier, would we be if we just did.not.care. about how others perceived us? If we tried something, failed, and walked away with a smile? If we embraced being the underdog? If we laughed at our mistakes?
Left Shark reminded us all of an important lesson on Sunday night. Dance like nobody’s watching. I will, Left Shark, I will.
