Ultra running training is probably 25% running, 25% cross training, and 50% mental. For this upcoming fall’s races, I have my running plan nailed down and I’m working on my mental toughness. Which only leaves the one thing I always fall short on—cross training.
I’ll be honest—unless I have someone dragging me out the door, I am the first to skip cross training. Even my daily push up and plank routine is a struggle to maintain (working out is so hard sometimes!). So I was super excited to hear that Planet Fitness Crestline was opening up near me and that B-Metro wanted me to help promote their grand opening.
For those of you who don’t know, Planet Fitness is the perfect gym for those who want a great and inexpensive place to work out. At $10 a month, you can afford to have your gym and race fees and yoga membership and shoes, and eat your cake too. Only don’t eat that entire cake—that defeats the purpose of going to the gym.
I would use Planet Fitness for a very specific goal—to cross train and make myself a stronger runner before I tackle the Pinhoti 100. So I met with Scott, their trainer who offers free Design-Your-Own-Program sessions. That’s right—I said free. As in, it comes with your membership. I told Scott what I was looking for, and he recommended that I strengthen my lower half to power up the hills and run faster on the flats, and then strengthen my upper body with high-rep low-weight workouts. Sounds good to me!
After I got my plan together, I hit the gym floor to learn about the equipment. Here were my torture devices of choice:
My hands-down absolute favorite part of Planet Fitness has to be the Black Card Spa. I am the biggest massage-lover you will find—I want my massage to both bring me to tears and completely relax me. I was crazy impressed that their massage chair and hydro massage bed met both of my requirements! Ten minutes in each of them and I was on Cloud 9.
Having never been in a Planet Fitness before, I was very pleasantly surprised at what I found. A brand-spanking-new gym, heavenly massage devices, and a price you can’t resist. Now I need to pull the trigger, sign up for a membership, and get serious about cross training. My muscles will thank me!
