Anatomy of a DNF – Lake Martin 50 Race Recap

Why am I so bad at race reports? Why don’t I just admit that they’re the worst to write and just abandon them? Because my Type A personality won’t let them go, dammit! So I’ll continue to be a slave to my blog. This Lake Martin 50 race report will be a stream-of-consciousness post, so roll with me here. My old race report is much more useful. Lake Martin 100/50/27 is a fantastic race. If you’ve considered running it but haven’t yet, do it! The course is a pleasant mix of rolling (read: hilly) single track and red clay jeep roads. It’s scenic and not technical and the perfect place to…

    My Bloody Valentine

If yesterday’s blog post piqued your curiosity, welcome back! Here is the real story of my Mercedes (Ultra) Marathon. The race I will never forget, even when the 30 miles fade from memory and my medal loses its luster. Men and squeamish women who like to pretend that periods don’t exist, this is your one-minute warning to vacate the premises. X-out now. Now. …Now. Are you still here? I’m telling you, I’m not holding back with my descriptions. Get out. The remainder of the post contains a whole lot of this: Ok, you’ve been fairly warned. I am no longer responsible for any projectile vomiting that occurs. Since I have previously…

    Mercedes (Ultra) Marathon Race Recap

I have been struggling to write a recap for the Mercedes Marathon, because this race was unlike any other I have run. When people have asked how it went, I’ve just stared blankly and said, “Uh, interesting?” What I’m going to do is divide my experience into two posts to make this easier on us all—The Race and The Incident. Today, you can read about how I turned Mercedes into a 30-mile training run. Tomorrow, if you make it through my disclaimers, you can read about The Incident. Darnell and I signed up for the Mercedes Marathon with the intention of using it as a very long training run to…

    Mountain Mist 50K Race Recap

Mountain Mist 50k—my first ultra of 2016 is in the bag! And boy, was it one hell of a race! The weekend turned out to be epic, and that’s no exaggeration. Northern Alabama got the sloppy seconds of Winter Storm Jonas, dumping a whopping inch an a half of ice and snow all over our parade. Which is laughable for the majority of the U.S., but brings Alabama to a grinding halt. The roads became an ice rink, forcing the city to postpone the race a day. This is where I have to pause my upcoming rambles and give a huge thanks to Dink, the race director, and all the volunteers who fought…

Resolution Run Recap – Darnell’s First Trail Race

When I’m in town over the holidays, I always do the Resolution Run. What better way to start the new year than with Red Mountain dirt all over your calves and shoes? I’ve been running it since their first year when the park wasn’t even officially open and the trails were just muddy indications of what was to come. The Resolution Run was a fun morning on the trails for me. I ran a 20k feeling decent despite nursing a cold, then turned around and ran 10 more miles the next day. My body is officially ready for the 2016 racing season! But this race wasn’t about me. My running…

    Bearly Ultra Race Recap

Ah, the Bearly Ultra. The name says it all. The time I was bearly recovered enough from Pinhoti to actually try and run fast. The day I bearly survived because it was unseasonably hot. The race I bearly finished. (See what I’m doing here?) I signed up for the race on a whim—my friends asked me to run on their relay team, Cougars and the Kitten. You can’t say no to running on a relay team, especially if there are costumes involved! I had originally planned to run all 27 miles (run my leg and then keep running) for the fun of it, but quickly changed my plan when I saw the temperatures.…
