What to Pack for an Ultra Marathon

The unofficial kickoff to trail running season is only a few days away in the Deep South. Birmingham has the Oak Mountain 50k, and Alabama’s first 100 of the year (and 50 and 27-mile “fun run”) will be at Lake Martin. So, basically, this weekend we will have ALL THE ULTRAS! With a new racing season come new ultra runners who are probably trying to soak up every ounce of advice they can. Or at least that’s how I was. After a few years of trial-and-error and “Oh shit, I forgot X” and “Ugh, why did I bring Y,” I feel like I have my ultra packing list pretty much set…

    Mountain Mist 50K Race Recap

Mountain Mist 50k—my first ultra of 2016 is in the bag! And boy, was it one hell of a race! The weekend turned out to be epic, and that’s no exaggeration. Northern Alabama got the sloppy seconds of Winter Storm Jonas, dumping a whopping inch an a half of ice and snow all over our parade. Which is laughable for the majority of the U.S., but brings Alabama to a grinding halt. The roads became an ice rink, forcing the city to postpone the race a day. This is where I have to pause my upcoming rambles and give a huge thanks to Dink, the race director, and all the volunteers who fought…

Planning the See Tanya Run 50K

Woohoo! This is the week of the See Tanya Run 50K (#STR50K)! Oh, did you notice that I added a K to my distance? I had initially planned for this to be a 50-miler, but I decided on a whim on Friday to register for the Mississippi 50 trail race on March 1st. Yikes. I figure it’s best to not run my two longest distances a month apart, so I’ll save my legs for the race and run a measly 31+ miles instead this weekend. While I’m kind of sad to not cross this off my list of goals just yet, I need to run at least one 50K before March,…

    Tranquility Lake 50K Race Recap

It’s been three weeks since I ran the Tranquility Lake 50K, so I guess it’s about time for a recap. I’m always late on recaps; has anyone else noticed? Oh well—better late than never. Tranquility was my second 50K (not counting my 30-mile jaunt at Pinhoti), and I loved it. The entire race reaffirmed my passion for ultra running. I was so happy. Like, giddy-the-entire-race happy. There were times when I wanted to just sit down and enjoy the fading fall colors and crisp weather, and then I’d remember it was a race and I had to run. There were leaves falling and hitting my face—is that not storybook-perfect? Sigh. Totally unlike…

The Day I Became An Ultra Runner – Mt. Cheaha 50k Recap

Warning—this will be long and most likely will ramble, but I have over seven hours worth of thoughts to share. If you’re looking for the Cliff Notes version, here it is: I finished in 7:22, fell a lot, bled a little, loved every moment, and am itching to do another. If you want to take a peek inside my head, here we go: Zack and I decided to drive to the race on Saturday morning, since the start is only about an hour and a half from home. I chose to wear a tank top that crossed in the back (read: no falling straps), a long-sleeve tech shirt that I…

What Training for a 50k Taught Me

Well, I did it! I survived my first 50k and have fallen head over heels in love with ultra running. It was everything I hoped it would be and more. I will post my race recap tomorrow once I have all of the pictures together. In the meantime, when I registered for the race back in December, I made a list of things that I hoped to learn while training for this new distance. I looked back at the list today to see if I had accomplished what I had set out to do: Run trails more often I wanted to spend more time running trails to prepare properly for the…
